Can You Train Yourself To Be More Creative?

Creativity does not have one solid, clear-cut definition. The more I tried to understand its true meaning, the more I realized the definition differs drastically depending on personal and professional experiences. For example, for me, creativity is finding the connection between your ideas, imagination and dreams and then using your curiosity to bring this innovation to life.

Can you force creativity?

Creativity is a natural process that can be nurtured, harnessed, and cultivated. Forcing creativity rarely works. Staring at a blank page will not only stress you out but, likely, you won't be able to come up with anything useful. Nothing special comes out of forcing creativity.

Is creativity a muscle or a birthmark?

Creativity is a muscle and, just like with your biceps or your quads, if you want your creativity muscle to get bigger and stronger, it needs exercise. Let's look at some simple ways to give it a great workout!

Here are 7 ways to build your creativity:

  1. Change your daily routine and look at the world through fresh eyes

  2. Document everything, take photographs, collect things and keep mementos

  3. Read more books. Books are wonderful for creating new thoughts and stimulating great ideas

  4. Browse inspirational groups and websites through social media

  5. Keep a journal as it helps in getting thoughts and ideas down on paper

  6. Meditate to clear your mind and emotions

  7. Let your mind wander. Challenge yourself to think up lots of ideas around a topic or problem at the same time

Creativity is a valuable workplace skill because it can be a useful tool for developing new ideas, increasing efficiency and devising solutions to complex problems. While you may have natural creativity skills in certain forms, it is a skill that can be learned and developed over time.

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.” – Steve Jobs, founder of Apple
